WeatherFlow part of IOOS Study

WeatherFlow, a member of Chesapeake Bay Observation System, is participating in a NOAA Coastal Service Center project recommended for funding that involves a 3-year study aimed to improve storm surge and inundation forecast capabilities in the Chesapeake Bay. As development continues to increase along the shores of the bay and its tributaries, the region is becoming increasingly susceptible to damage from tidal storm surges and river flooding that occur during tropical storms (hurricanes) and nor’easters. A critical factor driving waters to dangerous levels are surface winds. WeatherFlow will provide observations from its extensive network, along with output from its high resolution (2-km) forecast model that predicts winds throughout the CB region in order to improve forecasting of wind-driven storm events. .
