Hans VanBenschoten

Hans VanBenschoten first joined WeatherFlow as a student intern in the summer of 2013. At the time, while still an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, he participated in a research a project analyzing WeatherFlow Hurricane Mesonet data. He also interned at the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, VA where he did research on sounding characteristics of upslope flow snowfall events across the central Appalachians, something that remains a wintertime interest of his. Yet, those internships ended and Hans went on to complete his university studies, earning a B.S. in Meteorology and a B.A. in Geography.

Hans has a particular interest in tracking and forecasting large synoptic-scale weather events, especially when impacting the Mid-Atlantic region. This interest led him to work as an operational meteorologist at a large firm in Gaithersburg, MD, focusing on the impacts of weather on business. Yet, by the spring of 2019, back at home in northern Virginia, Hans had returned to WeatherFlow, this time as a member of the forecasting division.

On weekends, this avid angler frequents Maryland’s Wye River or other northern Chesapeake Bay sites with the aim reeling in a whopper.
